Reimagining BIO for a New Era of Design Biennials
As the world’s oldest design biennial, BIO needed a platform worthy of its history and ambition. Redesign of BIO.si delivered a modern, bilingual experience with streamlined navigation, accessible archives, and a bold look that embodies the event’s progressive approach to design.
CHALLENGE
BIO, the world’s oldest design biennial, had an outdated website that no longer reflected its reputation, history, or forward-thinking vision. The platform struggled to present 60 years of design heritage in an engaging way, with archives scattered and navigation unintuitive. This limited its ability to connect with global audiences, promote upcoming editions, and maintain relevance in a digital-first cultural landscape. BIO needed a platform that could seamlessly merge past and present—offering an accessible, visually compelling experience for visitors, participants, and media alike.
Clear Cards, Effortless Navigation
Modular content blocks like this one distill complex exhibition materials into clear, accessible units. Visitors instantly understand where to click and what to expect. By prioritizing legibility, whitespace, and micro-interactions, these elements streamline discovery—guiding users through the BIO27 experience with ease, without overwhelming them with unnecessary noise.
Minimal Navigation, Maximum Clarity
The mobile menu design embraces simplicity—stripping navigation down to essential actions. Clear labels, generous spacing, and intuitive icons ensure users can find what they need without friction. By minimizing distractions, the interface enhances focus and accessibility, perfectly aligning with the exhibition’s design-forward, content-first philosophy.
SOLUTION
We redesigned and developed BIO into a responsive, bilingual digital hub that unifies the biennial’s vast archives and supports the promotion of future editions. The new platform features clear navigation, structured content, and a flexible architecture to adapt with each biennial. Visual design aligns with BIO’s identity, allowing each edition’s branding to shine while keeping a consistent framework. The result is a modern, user-friendly space that preserves BIO’s heritage while enhancing engagement through improved accessibility, faster performance, and mobile optimization.
